Prepare Thyself

“Everyone wants to win, but not everyone is willing to prepare to win.”

– Bob Knight

I first read this quote in Marc Cuban’s book “How to Win at the Sport of Business: If I Can Do It, You Can Do It”. It was during a time when my first entrepreneurial venture was falling apart, and this quote sent me into retrospection. I assessed my journey as an entrepreneur and it became clear – I was fighting to win, but I didn’t prepare myself hard enough to taste victory. Ever since, this became my personal moto – prepare thyself.

And here are some more advice in Mark Cuban’s own words.

  • Everyone is a genius in a bull market.
  • Take lots of chances.
  • You only have to be right once.
  • Sales Cure All. Know how your company will make money and how you will actually make sales.
  • Make your product easier to buy than your competition, or you will find your customers buying from them, not you.
  • Figure out how to be the best.
  • It’s not in the dreaming, it’s in the doing.
  • As far as technology, go with what you know. That is always the cheapest way.
  • Keep the organization flat. If you have managers reporting to managers in a startup, you will fail.
  • If an employee is about privacy, show them how to use the lock on the john. There is nothing private in a startup.
  • An espresso machine? Are you kidding me? Shoot yourself before you spend money on an espresso machine.
